Are You Called to Help?

By Cole Adema

A brief tour of your radio dial will tell you about our “Fly Over States,” remind you that “Country Must Be Country Wide,” and even reminisce about our “Home on the Range.” We like it “Way Out Here.” We know all our neighbors and can wave at everyone on Main Street. But this also means that it hits painfully close to home when someone in our community becomes ill or is injured. The same miles that separate us from the commotion of big city life are the same miles that separate us from emergency medical professionals. A strong local emergency services network provides vital support to keep rural communities healthy and growing. Our immigrant ancestors knew they had to combine self-sufficiency and an unwavering sense of small town civic duty to thrive on the prairie. This necessity has not changed for our generation. The charge to take care of our own is not just for someone else, it is for you and for me.

Frederick Area Ambulance Service needs your help taking care of our own. Dwindling numbers of active ambulance service members make it increasingly difficult, and at times nearly impossible, to ensure continuous staffing and stretch the current dedicated members dangerously thin. It is time for members of the community and surrounding area to step up and help fill this crucial need.

Starting October 1st, several area paramedics will be teaching an Emergency Medical Technician class in Frederick on Tuesday and Thursday nights and one Saturday morning per month. The classes will run through February 22nd with appropriate breaks for major holidays. The instructors understand the scheduling challenges of agricultural life and will work to be flexible while maintaining a professional class atmosphere and preparing the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful both while challenging the state and national tests and while caring for friends and family in the back of the ambulance. The class is open to anyone who will be at least 18 years old by one year following the class end date. People of all ages and generations make excellent EMTs, not just the young.  The cost of the class is set at $250 or one year commitment to the Frederick Area Ambulance Service.   Please consider becoming an EMT and subsequently a member of Frederick Area Ambulance Service.
