Frederick Forward
Frederick Forward is a community organization designed to promote economic development and poverty reduction in the Frederick area. The organization has several committees that work toward the organizations goals. They meet regularly on the third Monday of the month at the Titan Lounge at 7:00 pm. The organization is managed by a board of directors and annually elected officers. There is no official membership, as anyone interested in community betterment are welcome and encouraged to come to the meetings at any time or serve on any of the Frederick Forward committees.
Frederick was fortunate to participate in the Horizon’s II program from the fall of 2006 through the summer of 2008 sponsored by the Northwest Area Foundation and the South Dakota Extension program. This program, designed to reduce poverty and create leadership provided a significant shot in the arm for the community.
The Frederick Forward organization is strong and activities and projects are many:
- Community Events: Snow Queen, Holiday Extravaganza, St. Urho’s Day, Community Movie Nights via inflatable movie screen
- Installation of a Handicap accessible fishing dock in Simmons Park
- Annual community clean-up along with Day of Champions (collaboration with Northern State University athletes work with local residents on clean-up and projects within the community
- Donations to Historical Society, Community Store, Library, Senior Citizens and other organizations in need.
- Community Monthly (10 mo.) Newletter collaboration with Frederick School working toward Youth Development
- Business & housing development
- Finn Fest – An annual community event celebrating the Finnish heritage of the community and brining back “Midsummer” celebrations of years gone by.
- Helping Hand/Welcome Wagon – creating and maintaining events and activities to help those in need and to welcome newcomers into the community
