The Emma Burnahm Public Library has been an entity of the Town of Frederick since a public vote in 1919. The Library’s namesake, Emma Burnham, was instrumental in establishing reading rooms, the first library and a women’s study circle in 1909, The Alpha Circle, which still exists today.
The Library offers a full range of materials and services including: current adult fiction as well as classic literature, Local and Midwest collections, non-fiction (cookbooks are a favorite!), children’s picture books, chapter books and young adult books. Items not available in our own collection are easily ordered through the South Dakota Library Network which gives us access to books from all S.D. Libraries as well as those in other states if necessary.
In addition to the most current reading materials, the library offers high speed Internet Access to the public, a DVD movie collection, books on tape, and a copy machine with scanner. For genealogy research, the Library has archives of Frederick newspapers dating back to 1882, Frederick, Finnish Settlement and Brown County histories, high school year books and free patron use of exclusive research databases available only through the SD Library Network.
Historic displays of books, documents and other small items on loan from individuals are of interest to visitors and locals alike.
The Emma Burnham Public Library also operates a Local Access television channel which is provided to the Town of Frederick by Midcontinent Communications®. Through this service, non profit public announcements are available on local channel 7 within our community.
The Library maintains regular hours and is closed only for major holidays.
