ARTWORK SOUGHT FOR FINN FEST ART SHOW, JUNE 20; DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS FRIDAY

Area artists are invited to submit works to be considered for inclusion in an art show to be held Sunday, June 20, at the historic Savo Hall in rural Frederick in conjunction with Finn Fest.
The theme for the show is "Finnish Prairie Roots," and anything related to any part of the theme -- Finns or prairie or even roots -- is acceptable. Nearly any media is welcome; some possibilities include photography, paintings, quilts or other textile art or woodworking. Artists need to submit their own work; they can send as many entries as they like, but no more than three works will be selected from one artist. Selected artists will need to be available to bring artwork to a drop-off point in Aberdeen or Frederick on Monday, June 14.
Visitors will be invited to vote for their favorite, and a "Best of Show" prize will be awarded.
Interested artists should send an e-mail to frederickfinnfest@gmail.com with a photo of the work; its title and a brief description; whether the item is for sale and if so its price; and the artist's name, address, e-mail address and phone number. The deadline for entries is Friday, June 11.

FREDERICK MAN  INDUCTED INTO THE SD MUSICIANS HALL OF FAME

On May 20th, Jack Smith was inducted into the SD Musicians Hall of Fame at the Eagles Club in Aberdeen.  Jack's nomination was submitted to The Dakota Musician Association, serving North and South Dakota, for the honor by fellow musician, Mike Eisenbeisz.
Best known for his accordion playing, Jack’s musical interest started at an early age.  Spanning a 70 year career and still counting, Jack started playing the accordion with a small group in the mid 1940’s while attending high school in Frederick, SD.  The group played for some school parties, house parties, and small local dances.
Over the decades to follow, Jack played in several groups such as the “Rancheros”, “Rae and the Ranch Hands”, and “Mel’s Combo” playing at night clubs, lodges, wedding receptions and more.  He continues playing today with the “Chicken Pluckers” which includes his wife Rayma (the group’s original drummer) entertaining at nursing homes, senior centers and community functions.
Jack’s love for music has been passed down to his children; Jacki Bain (Huron), Patti Bauman (Moorhead, MN), Kurt Smith (Frederick) and Kraig Smith (Bell Buckle, TN).  Singing and playing a variety of musical instruments themselves or along with their father provides the greatest sense of pride and satisfaction for Jack.
The Hall of Fame program included a dinner, program including entertainment by fellow musicians and presentation to inductees.  Jack Smith’s picture will be hung in the main entertainment room of the Eagles Club in Aberdeen along with the other Hall of Fame inductees since the award program started.  Family members, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were in attendance for this once in a life-time honor.

MAIN STREET STATION OPEN

Once again gas is available in Frederick courtesy of the Main Street Station owned by Jim and Kay Dumire.   The facility is usually open between 7:00 am - 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday., and if they are there, they'll even fill you up on a Sunday which has been known to happen.  There are three types of fuel available including diesel, 10% ethanol, and regular.   The couple is working to see about getting credit card purchasing as well as new pumps that will allow for 24 hour service with a credit card.
The couple has put a lot of elbow grease cleaning up the inside and they are now working on the outside.  There will be new signage coming soon.  The old Cenex will look pretty impressive in the coming months.
In addition to the fuel the couple also has antiques for sale with more to come.  They are looking for ways to expand their business and offer  goods or services that are needed and not yet available in the community.  Stop by and give them hello and fill 'er up!

SECOND CLEAN-UP DAY JUNE 5

Clean up day #2 will be held on Saturday, June 5th.  Last chance prior to Finn Fest; June 18-20.  It will not be as extensive as our May one, but just as important.  The Gas Station and Historical Society will both be open as rest areas.  No food will be available at noon - however if anyone wants to bring bars for the volunteers, that would be wonderful.
The main project that needs to be done is the Frederick sign on 281.  Rock needs to be put under and around the sign (to keep the grass and weeds down) and to have the slate rock put on the pillers.  Farmers-light field rock is needed to put under the sign!  Can you donate and deliver the rock to the sign site?  Workers are needed to move the rock and help put the field stone on the sign.  We need at least 4 volunteers to help with both moving the rock and helping Gary set the stone.

Items needed to be finished and lead person to contact:
  • Sign on 281 - contact Gary Peterson - leader of this project
  • tree branch and debris removal and weed pulling and community clean up
  • assistance for gas station - contact Jim Dumier - is lead on this project
  • painting grocery store - contact Heidi Marttila-Losure - leader of this project
  • auditorium - contact Father Don Glover- is lead on this project

Georgia Smith is overseeing the clean up day.  We will plan to start at 9 am and the goal is to be done by 2 pm or shortly thereafter.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.  If you are interested in helping, please contact the lead person directly of the project you are interested in working on.  If willing to do general community clean up, please feel free to work on your own pace.  Trucks are needed as well as cleaning tools.   Thank you!!!  Georgia Smith  an be reach at 329-2131.

AUDITORIUM INPUT IS SOUGHT

Several ideas have floated around the community about what to do with the Frederick auditorium which was a Works Project Adminstration Building.  The one getting the most attention over the last few years was called "The Secret Garden".  This entailed removing what was left of the roof and creating an open air, season venue which could be used for activities like  summer musical theater, an outdoor movie venue using the inflatable theater, receptions,  family reunions and other summer events.  While this idea has a lot of popularity, it is now being reviewed that maybe it isn't the best use of the building.
Recent efforts to bring business into the community and no place to put them has spawned interest in replacing the roof and making the facility useful year-round, but more input is desired from current and former members of the community.  If you are interested in the future of the building, please take time to
complete the auditorium survey with ideas for the future of the building.

MARIE SCHLOSSER'S LAST RECITAL

On Wednesday May 26, 2010, Marie Schlosser held her final piano recital with the piano students she was currently teaching in her last year of music lessons.  Playing to a full house, her last 20 or so students played two songs each for one last time.  After awards were presented it was time for Marie to be honored.
Several former students attended the recital along with her current students, all bringing flowers which were presented to her while Krysti Mikkonen sang a specially edited version of the Ray Boltz song "Thank You" which seemed to describe almost perfectly Marie and her year's of music lessons to 100's of students.   When asked, Marie said she'd been teaching for about 47 years with up to 45 students many of those years.  Both current and former students quietly paraded forward during the song presenting Marie with a colorful variety of flowers.  It was a tearful yet beautiful moment to honor and thank Marie for her years of patience and service to music
The last Sunday in June Marie will be honored by St. Paul's and Savo churches for her years of playing at both facilities as she is also retiring from that service.  Laurel McDowell is handling the arrangements for the service.

From Marie Schlosser:

A huge heartfelt thank-you to the wonderful students (former and present) who surprised me at my student’s final piano recital Wednesday,  May 27th.  Thank – you Krysti Mikkonen for the beautiful words in the song that you sang to me, for the beautiful roses and other flowers given, the lovely cake.

It was truly an honor to know that the gift of music God gave is shining through all of you.  Please do this keep spreading your music around to all the people around you.  Music is what makes the heart glad.

Thank you so much again.

SCANDINAVIAN ROOTS MUSIC DUO TO PERFORM DURING FINN FEST

A new folk duo from the Twin Cities will perform in and near Frederick on June 19 and 20 as part of Finn Fest.

The music of Kaivama, made up of Sara Pajunen and Jonathan Rundman, is drawn from the traditional “pelimanni” fiddle-tune repertoire of Western Finland, Nordic hymnody, and the aggressive prog-folk attitude of contemporary Scandinavian roots music. Pajunen brings her violin virtuosity to play on the foundation provided by Rundman on guitar, mandolin or accordion for lively dance music that blends the modern and the traditional. You can listen to samples of their music here.

Kaivama will perform twice during the festival. At 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19, in Frederick (following the wife-carrying competition), Kaivama will give a cultural presentation as they play, including an introduction to the Finnish tango. They will perform again at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at the historic Savo Hall, located 5 miles east of U.S. Highway 281 at the intersection of Brown County 3 and 14.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS NEW OFFICERS

COMMUNITY STORE WANTS TO STOCK LOCAL FOOD

The Community Store would like to purchase produce from farmers and gardeners this growing season. The demand for local food is growing all over the country, and many in the Frederick community have also expressed an interested in buying local food. A strong local food economy is good for many reasons:

Energy conservation: To reduce energy used for long-distance food transport. Grocery store food travels an average of approximately 1,500 miles from production site to consumer plates! (Leopold Center, 2001)
Freshness and flavor: Locally grown foods are transported much shorter distances, which results in a fresher product with increased shelf-life and increased flavor.
Food safety: Locally grown foods serve smaller areas and are less likely to be targeted for intentional food contamination. Local foods are also produced on a smaller scale, reducing exposure to contaminants from large processing facilities.
Food security: Dependence on large producers from distant sources has the potential to increase food insecurity. Any break in the food system could prevent foods from arriving at destinations.
Strengthens local communities: Buying and selling locally grown foods strengthens local communities by creating and increasing quality relationships throughout the community.
Health: Locally grown foods are more likely to be grown in soil that is not leached of natural nutrients, thus passing on these nutrients to the produce.
Knowing the source: Our lives revolve around all aspects of food. As such, knowing where our food comes from creates a sense of personal involvement and responsibility.
Strengthening local economy: Buying and selling locally grown foods keeps the money in our communities rather than exporting it to distant, multinational corporations.
Supporting family farms and farmland preservation: Buying local foods supports family farmers who are not able, or who do not wish to compete with the larger corporate farms on their own terms. This, in turn, allows family farmers to preserve their land for future generations.
(Information from the Buy Fresh, Buy Local SD website)

If you are interested in growing food for the Community Store this summer, sign the sheet at the store or e-mail board member Heidi Marttila-Losure at hmmartti@yahoo.com. More information about regulations for food production in South Dakota, as well as a list of varieties of vegetables that grow well here, can be found here.

BOOKS DONATED TO FREDERICK SCHOOL LIBRARY

By Austin Minard

Students and librarians at Frederick Area School appreciate the books that were donated to the school’s library.
Several Dean Koontz titles have been added and donations also include  childrens and young adult books.  Also, a collection of works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is now available in the library.
In February the Book Fair raised money for new books and dozens were added to the collection.  Most of these were children's books.  Books Are Fun set up displays in the elementary lounge every 4-6 weeks, and based on their sales, more books are donated to the school library.  Most of these are children's selections also.  Their most recent donation was a set of six Fancy Nancy books, including Poison Ivy Expert and The Boy from Paris.
The librarians would like to thank everyone who purchased books at the Book Fair, which is the library's biggest fundraiser.  They also appreciate the donations, which help to keep new books on the high school shelves.
The school library will closed May 3, to give the librarians time to get all books back on the shelves.

BRIDGE RESULTS

By Cody Mehlhaff

Students at the Frederick Area High School tested their bridges that they built in the business math class. The students tested the structural break of their bridges along with the complete collapse of their bridge.
Anthony Reimer and Levi Christianson’s bridge held 25 pounds before its structural break and 35 pounds before its complete collapse.
The next group, Jamie Parsons and Ally Robertson, built their bridge to have both a structural and complete collapse at 70 pounds. Austin Gunther and Cody Mehlhaff’s bridge went to a 100 pounds before it had a structural break and the complete collapse took 450 pounds of weight. Justin Bock along with Matt Heine built a bridge that held 130 pounds of weight before the structure failed and made it to 225 pounds before the bridge completely collapsed.
Lee Brixy and Dusty Johnson’s bridge withstood 135 pounds of weight before the structure gave out and 160 pounds before its complete collapse. Alex Conn and Ty Hoffman’s bridge held 130 pounds before its structure failed and 190 pounds before its complete destruction. Thomas Kronberg and Cole Reginski made a bridge that held 205 pounds before its structural break and it also held 225 pounds before its complete collapse.

FREDERICK PICKS REPRESENTATIVES FOR BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE

By Erin Wolter

Frederick’s representatives for Boys’ State and Girls’ State have been chosen. This summer, Breanna Helland, Angela Goodall and Levi Adema will be heading to Vermillion and Aberdeen to represent Frederick among other students from across the state.
Breanna Helland was chosen to be Frederick’s representative for Girls’ State. As a result, she will be heading to Vermillion from May 31 to June 5. At the event, she will be participating in “hands-on citizenship training” and will learn more about government. She can become a candidate in the elections held there, and if chosen for office she will carry out her duties as a real representative would.
“I’m really excited to go,” says Helland. “I think it will be a good experience and I hope I learn a lot from it.”
Angela Goodall was chosen by the Girls’ State Committee as Frederick’s representative for Journalism City. Along with Helland, she will also go to Vermillion to be a journalist at the event, and will be busy with a number of activities. She will be instructed by a qualified journalism counselor and staff, and her duties will be to gather news about what’s going on during the Girls State session and publish it in the daily paper. Although she cannot run for any offices for the session, she can vote in the elections.
Levi Adema of Barnard was chosen as Frederick’s Boys’ State representative. He is homeschooled, but qualifies to be chosen as Frederick’s representative because he lives in the district.  He will be going to Northern State’s campus to participate in the events, which are similar to those at Girls’ State.
Both Boys’ State and Girls’ State events are sponsored by the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary to educate students about American government and to offer scholarship opportunities..

Dacotah Prairie Museum/ Granary All Dakota Fine Arts High School Exhibition

Garret Mittleider, Cole Regynski, Keely Geffre, Faith Wolter, Taryn Flinn, Amanda Daniels and Megan Walworth from Frederick Area High School attended the 15th Annual All-Dakota Fine Arts High School Exhibition at the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center in Aberdeen on April 23.  The event was sponsored by the Dacotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen and the Granary Rural Cultural Center in rural Groton.  Approximately 150 students and art teachers from schools in North and South Dakota were present to enjoy workshops and view the exhibition of student art.
The day-long event included a session with the two artistic judges, Emily Williams –Wheeler from Fargo and Nathan Cantwell from Aberdeen, who evaluated the student art and awarded prizes in 10 media categories.  In addition, the judges chose one team of students from North and South Dakota as the outstanding team based on the quality of all pieces of art entered by that school.
One student’s work was chosen as the “Best of Show” from all entries; the winner received a $500 saving bond that was sponsored by South Dakota Wheat Growers. Both days, participating students served as peer judges selecting their favorites in each of the 10 categories.  Winning art in all categories can be seen at
www.dacotahprairiemuseum.com  by clicking on the All Dakota Art Exhibition link.

The keynote speaker for the event was Brad Bachmeier, an art professor at Minnesota State University in Moorhead, MN who specializes in Raku Ceramics. Bachmeier discussed art as a career and shared insights on creative ways to be successful in that pursuit. Workshop presenters for the day were Rocky Hartberg, Langford SD, who is a cartoon and story illustrator; Michelle Bacon, Aberdeen SD, who works with clay and ceramics; Mary Hunt, Platte SD, who specializes in glass fusing, and Nick and Nicole Fischer, Aberdeen SD, who create large scale murals.

SPANISH II STUDENTS COMPLETE PROJECT

By Breanna Helland

In conjunction with a chapter focusing on travel, Spanish II students at Frederick Area completed a sentence-writing project to help enhance their learning skills.  The assignment was emailed to their teacher, Profesora Jaspers, and focused on a country chosen by each student, although no two students from any one school could choose the same country.
Sentences needed to follow a certain criteria outlined by the teacher in order to receive a good grade.  A total of 10 sentences were required about past, present progressive and future plans and could only be written in first-person, however they could be based on things that did not actually happen.
Four of the sentences needed to be in past tense about an imaginary trip made to the student’s chosen country last year.  Two had to be in present progressive tense about how they were preparing for an upcoming return trip right now.  The remaining four sentences were required to be in future tense in regards to the upcoming trip.
Commenting on the sentence-writing project, Erin Wolter, one of Frederick’s seven Spanish II students, said, “I liked how the project reinforced what we were learning and I thought it was a good challenge.”
Assignments were graded based on content, proper verb use, difficulty and effort.

TEACHERS AS READERS WRAP UP FINAL BOOK

Amanda Haar

Not only is the school year wrapping up,  so is the “Teachers as Readers” program.
“Teachers as Readers” meets each Monday from 3:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. to read books, through which they can earn a renewal credit from Dakota State University.  The group is required to have 15 contact hours and read four books for the credit.
Teachers that participate in the program are Janel Bergan, Jackie Brokaw, Renee Brooks, Krista Charleton, Jan Ellefson, Janet Elsen, Jessica Ringgenberg, Carma Ruenz, Paula Tschoick, Colleen Wallien and Tonya Zinter.
“We are currently finishing our fourth and final book “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown,” explained Mrs. Ruenz.  The group will have their final discussion of the book on May 17.  This selection, more than any read by the group, has grabbed their attention.  Many  describe it as the best book they’ve ever read.  Because it is a recent release (September 2009) group members purchased the book on line so they had access to multiple copies.
Other books read throughout the year include Buffalo for the Broken Heart by Dan O’ Brien (the One Book South Dakota selection), The Work of Wolves by Kent Meyers, who is a SD author, and  Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella.

TEACHERS ATTEND LETERS WORKSHOP

By Bianca Erdbruegger

Two teachers from the Frederick Area District attended the LETERS workshop in Sioux Falls on April 29 and 30. First grade teacher Renee Brooks and Colleen Wallien , second grade teacher, wanted to participate at this workshop to enrich their teaching.
LETERS stands for “Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling” and the program, which is organized by the state, was sponsoring trainings for early childhood educators who are interested in helping young children build a strong foundation in early literacy skills.
The teacher’s trainer was Lucy Hart Paulson, MS, CCC-SLP. She offered practical strategies for building skills in young children and she gave descriptions for the development of language and literacy in ways that create a deeper understanding.
Mrs. Brooks describes the workshop as an interesting and beneficial program.

There were several showings by various Frederick boys at state track this year including a rare first place finish in the 4 x 800 meter relay with a winning time of 3:31.05.  The group qualified for the finals on Friday in fourth place with a time of 3:34.44.  The relay team included Derek Barondeau leading the group, Ty Sumption, Cole Truebenbach and Brandon Haas finished the race.
On Friday, freshman Brian Sumption took home a 6th place finish in the high jump.  He tied 3 others with a jump of 5' 11".     Another relay team took third and that is the 4 x 800 meter relay with a time of 8:21.16.  Relay team members were Barondeau, Ty Sumption, Truebenbach and Haas.   Sophomore
Adam Dutenhoffer placed third in the shot put with a throw of 50.04'.  This is quite amazing since Adam threw at only 3 meets prior to the state meet due to recovery time needed from shoulder surgery.  Making a splash by placing in 3 different events, Brandon Haas really made his presence known.  In addition to placing in the two relay he also placed 4th in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.16 seconds.
As a team Frederick boys were in 8th place with 28.5 points out of a total of 49 teams.  Congratulations to everyone for a job well done.
