FREDERICK FROLIC Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show Get ready for an evening of delicious food and great entertainment as area talent is showcased at an event being called Frederick Frolic. With sports usually taking center stage for community events, we will hear mostly music along with perhaps a bit of other entertainment on this fine Saturday evening February 20, 2010. Beginning with dinner of salad, spaghetti, garlic bread, and a delicious home-made specialty dessert, the evening gets off to a good start. The dinner will be served from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the lunchroom of Frederick High School. By 7:00 pm guests will move into the gymnasium to hear an evening of entertainment begin. A program that promises to not last much more than an hour should make for a good way to spend a Saturday evening. Tickets for the evening are only $10/person for dinner and the show or $30 for a family. If you can only make the show the cost will be $5. All proceeds go toward the support of the Frederick Area Music Boosters which helps supplement expenses for the Frederick Area School District music program and Frederick Forward, a local organization that promotes economic development and poverty reduction in the Frederick Area.

By
Breanna Helland
Frederick Area juniors recently
investigated career choices by completing a paper for their English class. Jackie Brokaw, English teacher, assigned the
papers in order to help the students realize what kinds of careers they would
like to pursue in the near future. All papers were to be completed as a
rough draft on Thursday, January 14 and the finals were turned in Monday,
January 18. The students’ writings were
to be completed in MLA format and had to be at least four pages to get full
credit. A wide variety of fields were
investigated, ranging from medicine to mechanics to farming. “I thought writing a career paper
helped me narrow down my career choices.
It also helped me decide what kind of work I want to do when I get
older,” commented Austin Minard, who looked at the ups and downs of being a
pharmacist. Following the assignment, students
had to construct Powerpoint presentations which gave the rest of the class an
opportunity to gain knowledge about unknown careers and future possibilities.
Before making final decisions about
their life after high school, many Frederick Area students narrow down
decisions by attending college days sponsored by a university or college. During the event, students get an
opportunity to tour the campus, learn about activities that the college offers
and visit campus dorms and classrooms. Recently Frederick seniors visited
campuses in Wahpeton and Brookings. “Touring and visiting Wahpeton (NDSCS)helped
me think about my future and it also gave me a lot to think about before
narrowing my decision down,” said Allyssa Robertson after touring at Wahpeton. She
hopes to attend NDSCS and major in dental hygiene. Senior Jamie Parsons also toured
NDSCS. Chelsy Podoll, Frederick senior, recently
spent at day at SDSU in Brookings.
Although she had pretty much decided on SDSU for her future schooling,
the visit helped to confirm her plans.
SEVENTH GRADE COMPLETES RESEARCH PROJECT
Stef Sumption
This
year the seventh grade is learning correct format for research papers. To begin their study, they did a
“sample” paper using materials provided by the teacher. This allowed them to practice summarizing,
documenting and the correct style for a works cited page. Now
they are completing the research paper for their science fair project. “It was kind of hard to find all of
the information and it took awhile to get done with, but in the end I was happy
to get it done and see my results,” said Becca Mittleider, a student in the
seventh grade. The
seventh graders have to include documented information as well as their
procedure and experiment. “This
was challenging yet interesting to learn about and I am especially excited to
see how everything turns out,” said Kirsten Rall, another student in the
seventh grade.
SPRING PLAY IN THE WORKS FOR FHS
By Erin Wolter
It’s getting to be that time of year again—third quarter
is halfway through, and the fourth quarter will soon be here. Basketball season
is starting to wind down, and track will start in about a month. But more
importantly, it’s time for the play!| Students in grades 7-12 who were interested were able to
sign up for the play last week. The amount of students willing to try out for
the play determined what play would be selected to practice and perform. In
this case, about 12 students signed up. Carma Ruenz and Tonya Zinter are the directors. “We’re in
the process of selecting a play,” said Mrs. Ruenz. “We’re previewing six
options. Practices will begin March 1 and will be held every day
after school. The play is set for Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
JOURNALISM III STUDENTS SOLD CARNATIONS
Journalism III students at Frederick
Area High School recently sold carnations through February 2 as a
fundraiser for the yearbook. Students
who participate in the class include seniors Chelsy Podoll and Jaime Parsons. Each flower was sold for two dollars and
three colors were available for students to choose from. A red flower stood for love, a pink carnation
was for a secret admirer and white meant friendship. Students could order an unlimited number of
carnations. Carma Ruenz, Frederick’s journalism
teacher, commented, “Carnations are a super fundraiser! I’m always amazed at the number of people who
order carnations. The best part of the
whole thing is when we get the buckets full of flowers and get to hand them
out.” Carnations arrived at the school
on Thursday, February 11. Upon arrival,
the flowers were delivered to the students until all carnations were
distributed. Frederick ordered the carnations from
Kessler’s.
