FREDERICKAREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The mission of the Frederick Area Historical Society is to celebrate our heritage and preserve it for future generations.

The Frederick Area Historical Society was established at a meeting April 19, 2006 to work in conjunction with the Frederick 125th Committee so that any profits from the 125th events would go to the historical society for their projects. Annual meetings with election of officers will be held in April of each year.

Charter members are Gary Peterson, Rich & Gayle Bakeberg, Jim & Kay Dumire, Pat & Ray Mikkonen, Krysti Mikkonen, Bob & Val Nixon and Peggy Peterson Worthy.
The first project of the Historical Society was to build an authentic sod house on lots purchased for a museum site. The sod house was completed, with help from the Community Club Men and other volunteers, in time for the 125th Celebration, July 6-8, 2007. The site is located at 412 Main St. Frederick, S.D.

The success of the 125th Celebration has enabled the Frederick Area Historical Society to move ahead with plans to bring the Senn School House (currently on US Hwy. 281 north of Frederick) into town and locate it on the site near the sod house. It would be set up to replicate an old country school house. This school house has been donated to us by the Osceola Township Board.

Future plans are to bring in a second school house, the Allison School which has been donated to us by the Allison Township Board. This building would be located on the same lot and would house a variety of memorabilia from the area. Both schools will require funds for foundations, moving and repairs before they will be suitable for use as museums.

People of all ages, near or far may become members of the Frederick Area Historical Society and be a part of the planning and implementation of projects. An annual membership fee of $10.00 has been established, with memberships to be renewed in January of each year. These funds as well as donations of money and manpower will be necessary to complete the projects we have begun and to maintain the buildings and collections.

An acquisitions committee will be designated in the near future to begin accepting donations of artifacts, photographs, documents, etc. to be housed in the museums. Watch the Frederick website, fredericksd.com for more information.

SOD HOUSE PROJECT: The Sod House project honors our ancestors and will serve the community as a long term attraction.  The Historical Society hopes to move two country school houses to use as museums.  These will be moved into town and repaired as funding permits.  The lots have been purchased and the schools have been donated by the townships.  A debt of $3,500 has been incurred to purchase the lots and construct the sod house. Foundations for the schools will cost about $2,000 each.  Repairs depend on the condition of the respective schools but should run from $2,000-$5,000 each.
